Bangkok Art Biennale Foundation (BABF) was founded in 2017 with the mission to foster cross-cultural exchange between artists and creative practitioners from around the world. Its diverse programming creates more opportunities for artists, especially from the Global South, to hone their practices and exhibit and produce new works, thus gaining more exposure in the international art scene. As a platform, Bangkok Art Biennale Foundation supports scholarly and open discussions in contemporary art and issues beyond, and focuses on making art education inclusive and accessible, not only to the art aficionados and art tourists, but to younger local audiences in Thailand, and the public at large. Acting as a bridge between the art sector and other disciplines, and forming alliances with both the public and private sectors including government organizations, embassies, cultural institutions, schools, and various businesses, the Foundation’s mission is also to support the development of the art ecosystem and the infrastructure of the art industry in Southeast Asia, boost creative economy, offer more opportunities for diversity and accessibility of the arts, benefit Thai education and cultural exchange, as well as create awareness and inspire for solutions to the pressing issues, such as migration, refugee crises, wars, social inequality, environmental disasters and so on.
BAB Foundation’s activities comprises a rich programme of public events, including educational conferences and symposiums, artist talks, hands-on workshops, guided visits, publications, and online programs for audiences to gain a richer understanding and appreciation of the arts.
As part of the BAB educational program, BAB Foundation established a BAB Academy project, which aims to build a stronger appreciation and understanding of the arts in the community and to provide an opportunity for art lovers and art professionals to enhance their studies and experience.
Furthermore, every edition, BAB Foundation hosts a Dek BAB program, which gives opportunities for students and people interested in art to work at the major biennale with renowned Thai and international artists as artist crews, liaisons, docents and art guides. Curators and art gurus organize the workshops and training activities to help bridge artists and spectators.
มูลนิธิ บางกอก อาร์ต เบียนนาเล่ (มูลนิธิฯ) ก่อตั้งในปี พ.ศ. 2560 มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อส่งเสริมการแลกเปลี่ยนข้ามวัฒนธรรมระหว่างศิลปินและผู้ปฏิบัติการสร้างสรรค์จากทั่วทุกมุมโลก และจัดโครงการในหลากหลายรูปแบบ เพื่อสร้างโอกาสให้กับศิลปิน โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งศิลปินจากซีกโลกใต้ (global south) ให้ได้มีโอกาสฝึกฝน จัดแสดง และผลิตผลงานใหม่ และเป็นที่รู้จักมากขึ้นในวงการศิลปะระดับนานาชาติ และเป็นแพลตฟอร์มที่สนับสนุนการอภิปรายเชิงวิชาการและมุมมองที่เปิดกว้างเกี่ยวกับศิลปะร่วมสมัย และประเด็นอื่นๆ และมุ่งเน้นให้การศึกษาทางด้านศิลปะเข้าถึงได้ง่ายขึ้นกับทุกคน ไม่เพียงแต่ผู้สนใจรักศิลปะและนักท่องเที่ยวทางศิลปะเท่านั้น แต่ยังรวมถึงนักเรียน นักศึกษาในประเทศไทย และสาธารณชน
โดยโครงการ บางกอก อาร์ต เบียนนาเล่ (BAB) คือ เทศกาลศิลปะร่วมสมัยนานาชาติที่จัดขึ้นทุกสองปีในเมืองกรุงเทพฯ และจัดแสดงผลงานศิลปะเป็นระยะเวลา 4 เดือน แปรเปลี่ยนให้กรุงเทพฯ กลายเป็นศูนย์กลางที่ส่งเสริมศิลปะ ความคิดสร้างสรรค์ และวัฒนธรรมนานาชาติ งานนิทรรศการจัดแสดงบนพื้นที่ศิลปวัฒนธรรมต่าง ๆ รวมไปถึงแหล่งท่องเที่ยว วัด และสถานที่สาธารณะต่างๆ เน้นย้ำเสน่ห์ความเป็นกรุงเทพฯ ด้วยการเชื่อมโยงมรดกทางวัฒนธรรมรัตนโกสินทร์เข้ากับวิถีชีวิตคนเมืองกรุง
เทศกาลศิลปะร่วมสมัยนานาชาติ บางกอก อาร์ต เบียนนาเล่ เป็นเทศกาลที่ไม่คิดค่าเข้าชม และใน 3 ครั้งที่ผ่านมาได้ดึงดูดผู้เข้าชมทั้งจากไทยและต่างประเทศ รวมกันกว่า 3.5 ล้านคน และมีศิลปินเข้าร่วมแสดงกว่า 300 คนทั้งจากภูมิภาคเอเชีย ยุโรป อเมริกา โอเชียเนีย และแอฟริกา และในช่วงที่เกิดโรคระบาดโควิด-19 เทศกาลก็ได้ขยายขอบเขตการเข้าชมไปในรูปแบบออนไลน์ ในชื่อแพลตฟอร์มว่า BAB Virtual Venue อีกด้วย เพื่อให้ผู้ชมจากทั่วทุกมุมโลกได้มีส่วนร่วม และมีผู้เข้าชมมากกว่า 2.3 ล้านคนต่อปี ธีมของเทศกาลศิลปะร่วมสมัยในแต่ละครั้งที่จัด ปรับเปลี่ยนไปตามความเป็นไปต่างๆ ของโลก ได้แก่ Beyond Bliss สุขสะพรั่ง พลังอาร์ต, Escape Routes ศิลป์สร้างทางสุข, CHAOS : CALM โกลาหล : สงบสุข โดยหวังว่าการชมผลงานศิลปะร่วมสมัยจะเป็นตัวกระตุ้นให้ผู้ชมได้ฉุกคิดถึงประเด็นทางสังคม การเมือง และสิ่งแวดล้อม ไม่ว่าจะเป็นในระดับท้องถิ่นหรือไกลกว่า และย้ำให้ตั้งคำถามกับคำว่า‘ร่วมสมัย’
นอกจากนี้ มูลนิธิฯ ยังมีพันธกิจในการสนับสนุนการเติบโตของระบบนิเวศศิลปะ และโครงสร้างพื้นฐานของอุตสาหกรรมศิลปะในเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ และทำหน้าที่เป็นสะพานเชื่อมระหว่างวงการศิลปะ กับแขนงสาขาอื่นๆ โดยสร้างพันธมิตรกับทั้งภาครัฐและภาคเอกชน ไม่ว่าจะเป็นหน่วยงานรัฐ สถานทูต สถาบันวัฒนธรรม สถานศึกษา และองค์กรต่างๆ
