Here’s a recap of the three-day Nurture Gaia symposium held from October 24-26, 2024, which explored the role of contemporary art in shaping culture and society, addressing themes like cultural practices, political expression, artistic innovation, and global challenges. The symposium brought together a stellar lineup of international speakers, artists, curators, and academics, offering valuable insights and engaging discussions.
Day 1: A Vibrant Kickoff at the W Hotel
The symposium began on an inspiring note with a warm welcome from Prof. Dr. Apinan Poshyananda. The day featured a captivating conversation with contemporary artist Adel Abdessemed and David Elliot, as Adel shared insights into his thought-provoking practice and the impactful artworks showcased in BAB2024.
Akiko Miki, BAB2024's Curator, led the first panel, Curating Conversations, with artists AKI INOMATA, Mai Yamashita, and Naoto Kobayashi, exploring sustainability and human-nature connections in their artistic practices. A subsequent panel, moderated by Akiko, delved deeper into environmental consciousness and cultural narratives, featuring Ari Bayuaji, Amanda Heng, Bagus Pandega, and Kei Imazu.
The day set an exciting tone, marked by dynamic discussions and exchanges that laid the foundation for the rest of the symposium.
Day 2: Powerful Presentations at BACC
The second day continued the momentum with an inspiring keynote by Lisa Reihana, who shared her perspectives on blending art and storytelling. Ms. Adulaya Hoontrakul, Director of BACC, opened the day, welcoming attendees to the venue.
Panels like A Gentle Politicking, featuring Dr. Brian Curtin, Susan Collins, George Bolster, Jessica Segall, and Bruce Asbestos, explored the interplay between aesthetics and activism in art. Tales of the Untolds, led by BAB2024 Curators Pojai Akratanakul and Dr. Paramaporn Sirikulchayanont, brought hidden narratives to light, with contributions from artists Som Supaparinya, Jedsada Tangtrakulwong, Dusadee Huntrakul, and Busui Ajaw. The day was rich with energy, inspiration, and thought-provoking discussions.
Day 3: A Memorable Finale at BACC
The final day at BACC left a lasting impact, beginning with a panel discussion on curatorial insights and contemporary art practices led by Prof. Dr. Apinan Poshyananda. Joined by Agnes Arellano, Guerreiro do Divino Amor, and George K, the panel provided an in-depth look into their works featured at BAB2024.
The grand finale featured a keynote by Jean-Hubert Martin, Honorary Director of the Musée national d’art moderne Centre Pompidou. His presentation, Art Between Politics and Transcendence, explored the delicate balance between artistic expression and societal impact, closing the symposium on a profound note.
