Open Call Application Period

‍Eligibility and Criteria

‍1. Applicants should be an artist or a collective and there is no restriction on age, race, ethnic background, or nationality. The application must be submitted exclusively by the artist or the collective. Galleries or other agents cannot apply on behalf of artists.

2. If you apply as a collective, please provide evidence of previous works or collaborations as a collective that were completed prior to the application.

3. Applications will be chosen by the curatorial team based on:

- Relevance to the BAB 2024 theme Nurture Gaia.
- Relation to contemporaneity and/or important issues of the now.
- Merit and quality.
- Feasibility in regard to general management.

4. Applicants are expected to provide evidence of a commitment to establishing an artistic career.

5. The work and/or project cannot risk violating any rights, including intellectual property rights, of a third party.

‍Application Submission Process

‍1. The applicant must complete all required areas.
‍
2. After completing all required areas, you will be asked to upload a single PDF file of no more than six pages and no more than 10MB in an A4 format, either in English or Thai. This should contain:

2.1. A Curriculum Vitae (CV) of no more than one page. For collectives, this will be a history of your collaborative work.

2.2. A portfolio which contains:

2.2.1. Images and descriptions of past works/projects and of no more than three pages.

2.2.2. A proposal for BAB 2024 which may include photographs, sketches, renderings, descriptions, and of no more than two pages. The proposal must include the title of the work/project. We encourage you to propose existing works or works in process as we do not provide a production budget.
‍Note: For digital, video, or audio works/projects, please be sure to include any URL link[s] and any passwords in the PDF. This link should be accessible until January 2024. Links cannot be accepted by email.

‍3. There are no participation or registration fees for BAB 2024.

4. Amendments to the application are not possible after submission.
Once submitted no amendments are allowed to be made.‍

Selection Process‍

The selection process consists of three stages led by the curatorial team. These are:

1. Reviewing the artist’s and/or collective’s proposal and past works. Incomplete applications without examples of past works will not be reviewed.

2. A shortlisting of submissions. This usually accounts for 30-50% of submissions and includes a system of anonymous voting by the team and any invited others. Proposals for the works and/or projects to show are considered at this stage but please note that while BAB offers technical support, to be discussed later with the curator, we do not commission new works/projects.

3. Individual interviews of shortlisted artists and/or collectives over Zoom, led by the curatorial team, no later than the 15th January 2024.

After the interview a final selection will be made and each successful artist or collective will be assigned to a BAB curator to finalise the work/project for BAB 2024. All submissions will be notified of the outcome by 31st January 2024.‍

FAQ‍

Am I eligible to re-apply if I applied through the open call for previous editions, or have participated as an artist in a previous BAB?
Yes.

Is the Open Call limited to Thailand-based artists only?
No. All artists regardless of nationality are encouraged to apply.

Can I apply as part of a collective?
Yes, the applicant[s] should clearly define themselves as a collective. Please include a designated primary contact in the submission. Only collectives that demonstrate a history of collaboration as a collective, or collaborative experiences prior to the application, will be considered.‍

If I belong to a collective that is applying for the Open Call, can I also apply as a solo artist?
Yes, if your solo practice differs from that of the collective. You must not be listed as the primary contact for the collective’s submission, and you must use a different email account for each application.

Am I eligible to apply with a collaborative project if I am a solo artist but occasionally collaborate with other artists and/or groups?
Yes, but please emphasise your previous collaborative work in the submission. Here we encourage the submission of a completed work/project though proposals for a collaborative work/project in Bangkok will be considered case-by-case. ‍

When can I begin the application?
The application will go live on 28rd October 2023, 0:00 am Bangkok time (GMT+7).

What is the deadline for final submission?
11th November 2023, 11:59 pm Bangkok time (GMT+7).‍

Can applications be submitted in a language other than English or Thai?
No.

Does BAB put limits on the media that can be submitted?
No, to encourage artistic freedom we do not limit the format, medium, or size, of the work/project.‍

Can I hand deliver, mail, or email my application?
No, all applications must be submitted through the online Open Call form at bkkartbiennale.com. We are unable to accept and will not review paper submissions, email submissions, or any other form of submission.

Can I complete the online application in multiple sittings?
‍No, you will not be able to save your unfinished application and return to the form at a later time. Once submitted amendments are not possible.‍

What if I make a mistake on my application, can I amend it after submission?
No. Once submitted, you will not be able to amend your application. Please do not duplicate your submission.

I am having problems submitting my application.

May I submit more than one application?
The panel will only review one application per one artist, and one application per one collective.

What are the specifications for submitting?
You can only submit one PDF file of no more than six pages and not larger than 10MB.

‍Can I propose an existing work/project?
Yes.

‍Is my proposed work/project the only one to be considered?
No, we will review both your past works and proposed work/project. The curatorial team will select applicants based on the criteria given, and consider your practice as a whole. If selected, you will work with a curator to finalise what to show.

‍Is an honorarium provided?
Yes, a standard honorarium is provided to each participating artist.

Are production costs covered?
Expenses for production costs are not covered. Please note that while BAB offers technical support such as installation, we do not wholly commission new works/projects. Applicants are encouraged to apply for external grants and BAB makes every effort to support this.‍

Are travel and shipping costs covered?
No, unless otherwise agreed with the team. Applicants are encouraged to apply for external grants and BAB makes every effort to support this.

Are preferences given to certain applications?
Preference is given to artists with financial backing and/or supported by grants.
