Bounpaul Phothyzan’s sculpture, installation and land art practice are driven by social and environmental issues relevant to Laos—from deforestation to the devastating legacies of war. His recent sculptures and installations include bomb casings and rusted ordinances, which are commonly collected and repurposed by locals for a range of uses, from canoes to architectural supports. Laos is the most bombed country in the world per capita, and these casings are a part of daily life in rural and farming communities, where unexploded bombs cause an immense number of casualties every year across the country. By incorporating them into his practice, the artist creates aesthetically appealing works that comment on the nation’s turbulent history and the resilience of its people.

Story from Plateau originates from Phothyzan’s awareness of the ongoing impact of unexploded ordnance in rural Laos, particularly its devastating effects on the lives of the Lao people. Each year, individuals continue to suffer injuries and lose their lives due to the remnants of war scattered across the region. Motivated by this realization, Phothyzan embarks on a journey spanning thousands of kilometers along the Ho Chi Minh Trail, starting from the northern part of Houaphanh Province and traversing Xiangkhouang Province, Borikhamxay Province, Khammouane Province, Savannakhet Province, Salavan Province, Sekong Province, and concluding in Attapeu Province. Through extensive surveys, Phothyzan discovers that the impact of unexploded bombs exceeds his initial understanding. It leaves a profound impact on the affected communities and weighs heavily on his conscience.

The work utilizes remnants from the war, specifically bomb shells carved into shapes that narrate the tales of the Lao people. The core message Phothyzan aims to convey revolves around the immense and lasting impact of the war on individuals. Many lives have been destroyed, and many continue to suffer, facing disabilities and hardships that alter their existence permanently.
